Nothing is invented. Everything is found, then transmuted.
ABOUT
Jennifer Bourne is a sculptor working in clay and stone. Her practice begins with what already exists: rock faces, lava flows, the elemental surfaces of a landscape shaped by pressure and time. She is drawn to nature at its most untamed, to the raw power that splits rock, drives the sea against the shore and turns molten earth to stone. It is wild and often violent, and that is where she finds her forms. She works either with a material to reveal what it wants to become, or against it, pushing past its bounds. The tension between those two impulses is the work.
The practice is experimental. Slips made from shell. Sand worked in as texture. Stone shavings used as glaze. The landscape goes into the work, not just onto it.
What comes out are objects that feel as though they have always existed. They simply are. They do not explain themselves.
Nothing leaves the studio unless the surface fully carries it.
