The Work
-
Sculpture in clay and stone by Jennifer Bourne, made in Ucluelet, British Columbia. The work draws on rock faces, lava flows and the elemental surfaces of the west coast landscape. The practice is always evolving, and experimenting across mediums is part of it. For now the work is in clay and stone, with room to grow into painting with clay-based pigments, lighting and other functional objects over time.

Clay and stone. The ceramics are hand built, with experimental surfaces: slips made from shell, sand worked in as texture, stone shavings used as glaze. The stone work is carved by hand and
-
Yes. Every work is unique and none is remade. The ceramics are built from different clay bodies, and each piece carries its own combination of glaze, slip and aggregate. Each combination builds on the last, so the surfaces keep evolving from one piece to the next. No two firings behave the same. In stone, no two pieces share the same shape, size or colour, because the material decides as much as the hand does.

No. Current work is sculptural and not intended for food or drink.
-
No. They are the material and the firing. Nothing leaves the studio unless the surface fully carries it.

Dust with a soft, dry cloth or brush. Keep pieces indoors and away from water, and don't use cleaning products. The stone is alabaster, which is soft and can scratch or bruise easily, so handle it with care and keep it dry and out of reach of sharp or heavy objects. For a higher shine, alabaster can be repolished with a light coat of clear paste wax or food-grade mineral oil, rubbed in with a soft cloth. Avoid cooking oils, which can go rancid.
